Butler and Basketball RPI's

For those who thought DePaul on the men's side was bad for conference RPI, the situation with Butler and conference RPI's is worse. Butler started the season 0-6 and lost to some truly bad teams. Bad teams in the high 200's who will continue to lose.

Now Butler is on a roll and beat St Johns last night who had a 16 RPI. That one loss to Butler dropped them to 33. Because of their losses Butler is only up to 163 but they will likely beat more teams. Currently they stand at 3-2 in league with losses to Seton Hall and DePaul on the road. The DePaul loss was early.

Butler has kept it up and is now 6-2 in the conference but just 10-9 overall. They have a 5 point loss to Seton Hall and a blowout loss to DePaul, but they've beaten everyone else except for Xavier, whom they play on Sunday. I think there was a steep learning curve with the new coach, but they've reached a point where they'll be competitive. I'm anxious to see how Coach Godlevske does next year. Perhaps he can get over the hump that Couture was never able to get past and get to the NCAA tournament.

Yeah, Butler has been impressive so far in conference play. Unfortunately, the Big East is so weak in wbb (as evidenced by the first place team, SHU 17-2,6-1, being unranked by the AP and 25th by the coaches) that there really isn't much of an opportunity to make up for the poor non-conference showing. This was a 2 bid league last year and I can't really see more than 3 this year without a "surprise" tourney winner- which Butler would be the top candidate for.

Another win for Butler, I think they will win the BE. What is their RPI now, surely there is some consideration for a team that jells late!

Butler's RPI was 93...gonna drop now with the loss to Creighton today. As hot as they've been, a Big East Tournament championship looks like their only hope at an NCAA Tournament bid. With only 1 BE team in the RPI top 50 and none in the top 25, they just don't have opportunities for good wins to offset those bad non-conference losses.
